Planet Zoo 2 welfare
Welfare warnings are not random. Each one points at a value the Zoopedia already publishes, which means each one has a fix order.
Planet Zoo 2 tracks animals individually: an animal can be unhappy while its habitat is technically correct, and vice versa. The fastest diagnosis is to match the warning category to the published value behind it.
The five categories that catch people out
| Category | Zoopedia value behind it | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Temperature band | Is the habitat inside the published range right now? |
| Terrain | Terrain mix percentages | Does the painted surface match the ranges? |
| Space | Land area / deep water area / shelter area | Is each area met separately? |
| Social | Group size and per-sex cap | Is the group inside both limits? |
| Enrichment | Food-based and habitat enrichment | Are the items that count for this species placed? |
Fix order that saves the most time
- Temperature first. It is a single habitat value, it is checked continuously, and it is cheap to fix. A habitat outside its band will keep generating warnings no matter what else you change.
- Then terrain. Repainting means moving animals out, so do it before adding stock.
- Then space. Check each published area separately: land, shelter and deep water are different measurements.
- Then social. Move surplus animals out before breeding more; the per-sex cap is usually the real limit.
- Then enrichment. Match the species list — food-based and habitat items are separate categories.
Worked examples
| Species | Value that decides the build | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Giant Panda | Temperature | 14–33 °C, barrier grade 4 at 2 m |
| Moon Jelly | Temperature (narrow band) | 9–19 °C, group 1–3 |
| Blacktip Reef Shark | Deep water + salinity | 210 m², saltwater, 22–28 °C |
| Toco Toucan | Land area | 50 m², group 1–2, 14–36 °C |
Each of those numbers is on the species page with the capture date, so a mismatch between page and game is visible rather than guessed at.
When a warning does not clear
- Check that the habitat actually contains the value the panel reports — the panel and the visual area can disagree after terrain edits.
- Check every individual: one animal outside its social limit can flag the group.
- Check for a patch change: 1.0.4 lists breeding frequency, shoal welfare and temperature calculation fixes, so behaviour changed within two days of launch.
FAQ
Common questions about this topic.
Why is my habitat fine but the animal still unhappy?
Welfare is per animal. Social limits, enrichment and health are individual checks, so one animal can be outside a limit that the habitat passes.
What does Thriving mean?
A stronger state than meeting the minimum: compatible species and full enrichment push welfare up. The species page lists thriving and neutral companion species where the Zoopedia publishes them.
Does temperature matter for exhibits?
Yes, and the bands can be narrow: the Moon Jelly needs 9–19 °C.
What changed in the patches?
1.0.4 adjusted breeding frequency, shoal welfare, temperature calculations and enrichment interactions. Each of those affects welfare.
