The first 90 minutes in Planet Zoo 2

Nine steps in the order that avoids the two classic launch mistakes: an enclosure the species cannot live in, and a zoo that cannot afford the animal it bought.

This sequence works in every mode. In Franchise it also keeps your Conservation Credits from being spent on an animal you cannot house.

The build order

  1. Choose an enclosure type first. Terrestrial habitats have no filtration and no airlocks, which makes them the cheapest opening move. Aquariums and aviaries add systems you must run.
  2. Open a species page before buying. Barrier grade and height, land area, temperature range and group size are printed in the Zoopedia; the species pages here show all four in one table.
  3. Paint terrain before animals. Terrain percentages are checked against the painted surface, so fixing them after release means moving animals out.
  4. Place shelter, water and enrichment. Shelter area counts separately from land area, and enrichment is a welfare category of its own.
  5. Release the first group at the low end. A pair is easier to keep inside the social limits than a full group; overstocking shows up as social warnings first.
  6. Staff before guests. Keepers and vets keep welfare stable; shops only earn once guests stay long enough.
  7. Research the species you already own. Research unlocks the care items that the second and third habitat will need.
  8. Breed only when welfare is stable. A breeding pair with a marginal habitat turns one problem into two.
  9. Bank Conservation Credits before upgrading. Accreditation, not cash, decides which species reach your animal market.

The two mistakes worth avoiding

  • Wrong enclosure type. An aquarium species in a terrestrial habitat is not a balance problem, it is a rebuild. Check the habitat type on the species page first.
  • Barrier too weak. Barrier grade and minimum height are per species. A grade-2 fence does not hold a species that needs grade 4, and climb-proof species need a closed top.

Once the first habitat is stable, the next decision is usually progression, not building:

FAQ

FAQ

Common questions about this topic.

What is the best first animal in Planet Zoo 2?

There is no single answer, but the cheapest start is a terrestrial species with a low barrier grade and a small land area. Filter the animal database by habitat type and read the barrier column before buying.

Should I start in Career, Franchise or Sandbox?

Career if you want guided objectives and medals, Franchise if you want the online zoo and market, Sandbox if you want to build without economy pressure. Progress does not carry between modes.

How much space does a first habitat need?

The Zoopedia publishes a land area per species. Use that number, then add shelter area, since shelter counts separately.

Why do my animals keep getting warnings?

Usually terrain or temperature: both are checked against values you can see on the species page. Run the welfare debugger with the warning category you see.
